An Interview with Yogini Unmani

Yogini Unmani was born under the name Jessie King. Now affectionately called Yogini Unmani the Healing Yogini.

When were you first introduced to yoga?
I was first introduced to yoga in 1990 when I had low back pain and did not know why. A friend suggested a yoga class. I signed up for 4 sessions and went to 2 and my back pain was healed. I did not return back to an asana yoga practice until 2002. That year I began studying under the Shivananda tradition with Master Yoga Teacher Yogi Hari. But from 1994 until 2004 I had been practicing Dhyan Yoga, the yoga of meditation, a non-movement form of yoga. I studied under the enlightened mystic Osho in 1994. Osho connected me to the beauty of meditation and the meditation led me to asana practice. I became certified and practiced for 1 year that practice led me to Vinyasa, which I taught and practiced for 1 year, and then in 2004 I met the master yogi Ana Forrest.

What is Forrest Yoga and how is it different from traditional yoga?
I pull from Ana’s words. I believe there is great integrity in her words. Forrest Yoga takes you on a physical and mental journey deep into the core of your being, you will create a heightened sense of awareness through breath and asana and open to the amazing quality of feeling that lives inside you. Forrest Yoga is a healing style of yoga that focuses on healing injuries and emotions. The practice encourages people to feel while in the poses, to release emotions that are stuck deep in the cell tissue and create more freedom in the body, balance in the emotions and calmness of mind.

You started out as a dancer and choreographer. Are you still continuing with that?
I will always be a dancer because the art form of dance translates into the great dance of life! I have simply moved my choreography into my practice, yoga demos and into creating extraordinary and compelling classes for people. My classes are always fun and healing.

Has yoga helped you in dance?
Yoga for me is a dance and dance helped me to create and chisel my path as a yogini. It is a perfect marriage of the two-movement connected by the breath.

What are some of the dance projects you have worked on?
My most connected pieces have been choreographing musicals for community theatre and being in the Alvin Alley Summer Stock.

Is this your first trip to Mumbai?
My first trip was in 1994 when I traveled to the prestigious Osho International Resort and Meditation Center in Pune, India where I stayed for three months going deeper into my meditation practice.

What do you expect from your workshop in the city?
I expect for people to get lit up, turned on and discover their path to yoga, health and healing. I expect people to feel like they have never felt before- a deep connection to body, mind spirit and core energy. I expect people to have a wonderful time. I expect to give the beautiful people of India many life-changing gifts. I know that from the efforts and love of the people of India I will receive many gifts as well.

How do you manage to make yoga fun?
Making yoga fun comes natural for me, it’s not something I do it is my dharma. It is my connection to myself and to beyond the self, connecting to that space that is inside all of us. Fun is very easy when you are in alignment with your life energy and your life path. It is an effortless phenomenon- connecting to the pure space which is the oneness that we all are.

Are more and more young people eager to learn this form of yoga?
Yes! Young people are very in touch with the life force within them and because this style dives deep into the core, young people connect with that. It makes this particular practice of yoga, Forrest Yoga; feel like a fit to their natural stage of life, their Agni.

How old are you?
I was born in 1966; I have made forty revolutions around this planet. However I am ageless, timeless, I am eternal.

When did you take on the name of yogini Unmani and why?
The name Yogini Unmani was given to me by my meditation master in 1994, the name means no mind, and it also translates into courage. It was given to me to remind me to go beyond the mind and to connect to that which is not seen only experienced.
